The City of Rochester and the school district are helping kids stay healthy this summer by offering free meals. The Summer Meals Program begins June 30.
Rochester has one of the worst child poverty rates in the nation. Last summer, this meal program served some 325,000 free meals to city kids 18 and younger. The city is working together with some area partners, like Foodlink, to get the message out to low-income families that free meals for kids are available all summer.
Foodlink says one in five children in the 10 county region has limited or uncertain access to adequate food. About 50 sites will serve breakfast and lunch all summer Monday through Friday, except July 4.
"We know that kids like simple food, thats what they're telling us so the City of Rochester and the school district have been doing some taste testing of summer foods this year and thats what we're learning," said Dina Faticone from Finger Lakes Health Systems.
Food sites include community agencies, schools with summer school, churches and recreation centers. Families do not need to apply.
The list of sites where summer meals will be distributed is available by calling 211. -
